f you are a beginner guitar player, then you have surely heard about guitar scales. So along the way you’ll be asking yourself questions like this: “what is the purpose of guitar scales?”. Well, to put it simply, guitar scales make your fingers go to the right notes without having to think about it. This kind of magic is called “improvisation”.

Start with a simple chord progression in C major: C major, A minor, D minor, G7. Then progressively add notes of the C major scale. Don’t think about notes. Think about guitar fingering (anyway, if you know the fretboard, you know what note you are playing too). If you add notes of the C Major scale, they will sound good. This happen because C major, A minor, D minor and G7 have the same notes of the C major scale (C, D, E, F, G, A, B). Let’s see :

C major = C, E and G

A minor = A, C and E

D minor = D, F and A

G7 = G, B and F

One of the ways to improvise a melody is to base your solo line on the notes of the underlying scale (as seen in the previous example). This type of scale-based improvisation is called horizontal improvisation. Another way to improvise a melody is to base your solo line on the notes of the chord (vertical improvisation). A chord based solo is a little like playing arpeggios. Anyway you could use more than one scale to develop your solo. Let’s take a look at the previous chord progression. There are certain scales that will magically fit this chord progression and allow you to improvise freely:

C major = major scale, lydian scale, pentatonic major scale
A minor = pentatonic minor scale, blues scale, dorian scale, phrygian
scale, aeolian scale
D minor = pentatonic minor scale, blues scale, dorian scale, phrygian scale, aeolian scale
G7 = mixolidian scale

If you like rock or blues guitar, you should take a look at pentatonic guitar scales too.

When I started play guitar a long time ago, there was one chance only: you had to go to music schools. It is not so bad if you are passionate about classical guitar or jazz guitar. When you study classical guitar, you have to take care of posture (the classical guitar is generally held on the left leg which is supported by a foot stool or the guitar is raised by some other device to bring it to a position central to the player’s body), you have to deal with difficult positions of the left hand, characteristic position of the right hand, long nails, arpeggios and so on. When you study jazz guitar you have to master chord progressions and scales. Besides you have to be aware of notes inside of chords and scales in order to learn jazz improvisation. Things are different if you like playing rock guitar or pop songs. For example, let’s suppose you like heavy metal guitar. You can buy two or three of instructional videos and learn licks from famous guitarists such as John Petrucci, Michael Angelo, Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore and many others or better yet, you can learn guitar licks by ear. This is a difficult task to accomplish because licks are usually too fast and you can’t distinguish each note. Time ago you had to play a CD and go back and forward for hours to grab notes. What a painful task. Today things are better than yesterday. Now there are many helpful tools to learn guitar riffs and you can slow down music without altering pitch. Great!
